Grampa Ott's

Grampa Ott's

Grampa Ott's is a cultivar of Ipomoea purpurea. The blooms are extremly dark purple. The photos here do not do them justice. Grampa Ott's is similar to .

First Bloom of the Season

This Grampa Ott's specimen ended up having my first bloom of the season on 19-JUN-2004.  He was only six inches tall when the bloom appeared. I had actually given up on this one because after appearing he did nothing all through May. In June he started filling out and now he ends up having the first bloom.

He is planted in a questionable location as far as the sun goes. He is between two fence posts and under a huge oak tree and so only gets a fraction of the sunlight he needs.

Grass does not grow very well in this area probably because the oak tree pulls all the water and nutrients out of the soil. His roots are growing down in between the cement used to set the two fence posts. All of this may either be helping or hurting his production.

Here are some seed pods on a Grampa Ott's. Note that they point downward like all seed pods on I. purpurea. Contrast these to the seed pods on I. tricolor.
