Orange Noah

Orange Noah

Orange Noah is a cultivar of Ipomoea coccinea. The blooms are reddish-orange with an orange center. It has heart-shaped leaves and the leaves and vines are hairless. Places selling seeds on the web for this vine sometimes say that this vine, "appeared after a flood in Missouri... ...escaped from a botanical garden...". But I have not seen an authorative reference for this claim. Show me.

NOTE: I have to admit a little confusion about this one. Sites on the web also show Ipomoea coccinea cultivars called Red Star, Red Morning Glory, Star Glory, Scarlet Morning Glory, and they all have the same description and, in photos, appear the same as what I am growing. Are these all names for the same cultivar? Or are there subtle differences that I am not aware of?   If anyone can clear this up for me, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Most of these that I planted did not come up. The ones that did were stunted (poor soil) and although they got a lot of sun, I gave up on them.  I don't think that there was anything wrong with the seeds. I have tried to get I. purpurea, I. alba, and I. nil to grow in that area before with the same bad results.

Orange Noah Blooms

However, it seems that I accidently got at least one Orange Noah seed mixed up with my seeds for Scarlett O'Hara and as I recently noticed a healthy Orange Noah vine growing amongst them. I know, it is hard to believe, but sometimes even I make a mistake. But it turned out great.

At this spot, they are growing in about 12 inches of topsoil but only get a couple of hours of sun every morning. They are on a slope next to the foundation of the house so the rain probably drains away a little too well.

I am an alumni of Virginia Tech. And, you know, I am a little annoyed that they would call this vine a "weed".

I bought the seeds from a student on E-Bay who was selling them to support 4-H.
